Humility Is Valuable

Romans 3:23: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Romans 3:12: They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

When one truly understands what he is and who he is it should break his pride and make him humble. We all sin. We all fail God. We have nothing to be proud of. Humility is necessary for salvation and forgiveness of sins.

1 Peter 5:5-6: Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

Romans 12:3: For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Psalms 34:18: The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

God can change a humble heart. A proud heart is impervious to Him. It is resistant to Him. It excludes Him. It has the power to keep Him out. He will not violate/penetrate a proud heart. A proud heart thinks it is better than others. A humble heart knows better.

God doesn*t call the worthy. No one is worthy. The lower your opinion is of yourself the more room there is to have a higher opinion of God. I am little. He is great. I am nothing. He is everything. We cannot have a high opinion of both ourselves and of God. The two positions are incompatible. A proud heart is incompatible with God.

Seeing God*s greatness did a wonderful thing for Job, Isaiah and Peter. It destroyed their inflated opinions of themselves. It made them humble before the Lord.

Job 42:5-6: I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

Isaiah 6:5: Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

Luke 5:8: When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus* knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

John the Baptist understood his position compared to that of Christ.

Luke 3:16: John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

I was acquainted with a lady who had such a low opinion of herself that she was ashamed to admit that she was a Christian. She felt she was an awful Christian. She thought admitting she was a Christian would cause others to reject Christ. She wanted them to have a better example of Christianity than she was. She is closer to God than she thinks. She is closer to God than many Christians who loudly proclaim their Christianity but are blissfully unaware of their pride.

A wise Christian will not let a low opinion of himself paralyze him. He will serve the Lord boldly, knowing God*s greatness is at work BECAUSE of his low opinion of himself. He will know that his pride gets in God*s way. He will want others to be humbled before God and experience His greatness. Refusing to witness and give the Word of God to others is being proud before God. It is disobeying Him. Witnessing and proclaiming God*s word is being humble before God.

We are to be meek before men. Meekness can be confused with humility but it is not the same. A meek Christian will not look down on others but he WILL witness and proclaim the Word of God. Humility before God will produce meekness before men.

2 Corinthians 4:7: But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

2 Corinthians 12:9: And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

2 Corinthians 10:17-18: But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
